Oscar Sherer State Park

Located in historic Osprey, between Sarasota and Venice just off Casey Key, Oscar Sherer State Park encompasses over 1380 acres of scrubby and pine flatwoods that offer protection to the Florida scrub-jay, a threatened species found only in Florida.

The park lands were once part of the estate of Elsa Sherer Burrows who donated her family’s 460 acre South Creek ranch upon her death in 1955. Named after her father, Oscar Sherer, the inventor of a process of dyeing shoe leather, the park was opened to the public in 1956. In 1991, a campaign by area realtor and environmentalist, Jon Thaxton, resulted in an adjacent 922 acres added to the park with Preservation 2000 funds through the state’s Conservation and Recreation Lands (CARL) program.

Oscar Sherer is now a popular recreational area with over 130,000 visitors each year and many activities to enjoy. Hiking or off-road biking on over 15 miles of trails, canoeing or kayaking along the mangroves of South Creek, tent or RV camping, and picnicking are some activities available. Saltwater and freshwater fishing are, of course, one of the most popular activities. The 3-acre freshwater lake, Lake Osprey, provides an opportunity to catch largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish, while South Creek allows for anglers to catch saltwater species. The park also offers many special programs including guided canoe tours, coffee socials, and youth programs.

With its convenient, central country location, Oscar Sherer State Park is a wonderful way for area residents and visitors to experience the natural beauty of Sarasota.

Nick Herron & Kathleen Herron of the Herron Group would be glad to show you any of the properties listed at The Oaks in Osprey, or any of the Sarasota Barrier Islands of Casey Key, Siesta Key, Longboat Key, Lido Key, Bird Key, Manasota Key, and Island of Venice. Call 941.350.5035.
