Oscar Sherer State Park

Located in historic Osprey, between Sarasota and Venice just off Casey Key, Oscar Sherer State Park encompasses over 1380 acres of scrubby and pine flatwoods that offer protection to the Florida scrub-jay, a threatened species found only in Florida.

The park lands were once part of the estate of Elsa Sherer Burrows who donated her family’s 460 acre South Creek ranch upon her death in 1955. Named after her father, Oscar Sherer, the inventor of a process of dyeing shoe leather, the park was opened to the public in 1956. In 1991, a campaign by area realtor and environmentalist, Jon Thaxton, resulted in an adjacent 922 acres added to the park with Preservation 2000 funds through the state’s Conservation and Recreation Lands (CARL) program.

Oscar Sherer is now a popular recreational area with over 130,000 visitors each year and many activities to enjoy. Hiking or off-road biking on over 15 miles of trails, canoeing or kayaking along the mangroves of South Creek, tent or RV camping, and picnicking are some activities available. Saltwater and freshwater fishing are, of course, one of the most popular activities. The 3-acre freshwater lake, Lake Osprey, provides an opportunity to catch largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish, while South Creek allows for anglers to catch saltwater species. The park also offers many special programs including guided canoe tours, coffee socials, and youth programs.

With its convenient, central country location, Oscar Sherer State Park is a wonderful way for area residents and visitors to experience the natural beauty of Sarasota.

Nick Herron & Kathleen Herron of the Herron Group would be glad to show you any of the properties listed at The Oaks in Osprey, or any of the Sarasota Barrier Islands of Casey Key, Siesta Key, Longboat Key, Lido Key, Bird Key, Manasota Key, and Island of Venice. Call 941.350.5035.

Dinner over Looking Casey Key

Last night we met some friends from Stoneybrook Golf & Country Club and Silver Oaks at the Aqua Restaurant & Little Wet Bar which over looks the North end of Casey Key. It is located in front of Bellagio Harbor Village condos, which just changed their name to Osprey Harbor Village. (This was because they had a lawsuit from The Bellagio in Vegas over the name & they decided to change the name.)

You can come by car or boat (channel Marker 33) which adds a lot to the ambiance of the restaurant and the great sunsets over Casey Key are just a big plus. Wednesday is Jazz with Dinner night and the Aqua was very busy and the food was wonderful as usual.

The Herron Group, RE/MAX Alliance Group, has one of the condos listed for sale. It has long Bay views looking North over to North Casey Key & up the Inter-coastal water way from the Living room, master bedroom and large tiled terrace. From the two other bedrooms you see the boat basin, docks, and marina. This unit has been reduced to $849,000. Plus you get a dry boat slip (Casey 12).

If you would like to see this condo or any others in the Osprey Harbor Village or any of the Casey Key Real Estate properties please call or e-mail Nick Herron or Kathleen Herron, the Herron Group, RE/MAX Alliance Group at 941-350-5035.

Casey Key Incorporation - Not this Year

At the meeting on March 30, 2009 concerning the incorporation of Casey Key, there was a call for an impromptu straw vote on how many residents present had an interest in the idea of having Casey Key become incorporated.

David Macrae a Casey Key resident who had organized the meeting called for a show of hands in support of incorporation. Only five residents raised their hands. He then asked who was opposed to the incorporation. The rest of the residents present raised their hands. There were probably a little over 100 Casey Key residents in attendance. There are around 567 registered voters on Casey Key.

The straw vote outcome was a surprise to all present. The group for it is pressing on to inform the residents as to the positives of being incorporated.

At this time it looks like the House Bill 1225, which has to become, a referendum in order for the residents of Casey Key to vote on the issue may not be heard this year by the Florida House Military and Local Issues Committee. If House Bill 1225 is not heard and passed the Casey Key residents won’t be able to vote for or against incorporation this year.

If you’re interested in Casey Key, one of Sarasota’s Barrier Islands e-mail Nick Herron, the Herron Group, and RE/MAX Alliance Group or call 941.350.5035.

February is a great month to be on Casey Key

What do Gulfport, Pensacola, Baton Rouge, Galveston, Mobile, New Orleans, and Sarasota have in common in February?

It’s Mardi Gras time!

OK, naming Sarasota with those famous Mardi Gras cities is a bit of a stretch, but Michael’s On East is hosting the Goodwill Industries annual Fat Tuesday Street Party on Tuesday the 24th, the official Mardi Gras celebration date. Guests will enjoy real New Orleans cuisine, Dixieland music, and good times that benefit the Goodwill organization. Ticket price is $100; proceeds support job training and services for the disabled.

February is a great month to be on Casey Key. Our seasonal friends and neighbors can’t get enough of this “warmth,” while our local friends whose blood is thinning are only slightly complaining about the “chill.” It’s all relative, but it is warm here today while in Montreal, they’re experiencing a wintry mix and a high in the low 30s. We can’t complain, and taking our boat out on days like these is what makes Florida living so incredible.

Do you like seafood? Expand your horizons a bit and head north to the 27th annual Cortez Commercial Fishing Festival on February 21 and 22. Cortez Village is a mixture of past and present; this small village dates back to 1880 and perches on the northern shore of Sarasota Bay. This year’s festival theme is “stone crabs”—sounds delicious. Artisans, music, and food vendors make this festival the “catch of the day.”

Here’s another catch of the day—this incredible beach house on 502 S. Casey Key Road, Nokomis, FL. Imagine the perfect Key West style beach house with metal roof where you can entertain your friends right on Casey Key beach. Your eyes won’t believe the sweeping views of the Gulf of Mexico from this 100 ft. beach frontage. Built in 1994, the open floor plan features a great room with a cozy fireplace and offers four bedrooms and four and a half baths. From the loft you can view the gulf or watch the boats on the bay. Highlights include a kitchen with granite countertops, Sub Zero, and a dumbwaiter to the lower level. The master bath is appointed with fine marble. Car buffs will love the oversize four to six car garage, workshop, and a gorgeous paver driveway—add in plenty of storage space for toys. This gated, oceanfront compound is attractively fenced with a security system and sprinkler system. Price reduced to $2,489,000; MLS #A3896125.

See it by boat—call 800-789-6580 or email Nick Herron with The Herron Group, RE/MAX Alliance Group and we’ll plan an afternoon on the water. Join us in the Wild Welshman, our 33 foot mid-cabin express craft; she’s a vintage beauty full of wonderful memories of the waters around Casey Key, Siesta Key, Lido Key, Longboat Key and the greater Sarasota area. There’s no better way to see waterfront real estate around the barrier islands of Sarasota than wining and dining on the Intracoastal.

Beach, Bay, or Back Nine… Live the Dream—The Herron Group is your waterfront real estate connection.

325 Casey Key Road Nokomis, Florida

The Herron Group with RE/MAX Alliance Group just re-listed 325 Casey Key Road Nokomis, Florida. This is the lowest priced Gulf Front home on Casey Key…it could very well steal your heart away. It is being offered at $1,599,000 with prices on the key going up to $18,500,000 for a Gulf to Bay property at the North end of Casey Key.

Casey Key is Sarasota’s most prestigious barrier island and home to the area’s most exclusive properties.

You can own this exceptional beachcomber’s haven and enjoy the spectacular sunsets from your glass walled family room or your very own private powdery white sandy beach. The panoramic water views are fantastic and unbelievable.

This is truly “Old Florida Charm” beach cottage built in 1947 and it still has the Pecky Cypress wood ceilings. Most of the homes that were built on Casey Key in the 30’s, 40’s and early 50’s were built with a lot of Pecky Cypress. An old neighbor of mine up at the North End of Casey Key who had an older home with Pecky Cypress told me it allowed the home to breath. Back then there wasn’t any air conditioning or central heating. You had a fireplace or two and most of the older homes were closed up over the summer months. Yet when the owners returned in the fall the homes were fine with no signs of mold or mildew.

On the humorous side I thought he was referring to the appearance of the wood which is holey and grooved as to why it helped the house breath. It probably didn’t hurt.

If you would like more information on Casey Key water front real estate please contact the Herron Group at 941-350-5035 or e-mail Nick Herron.

Casey Key by the Numbers

The saying goes that the only thing that doesn’t change is change itself. That’s mostly true, except perhaps for Casey Key.

The face of Florida’s west coast barrier islands has changed radically over the last 50 years. Old timers recall simpler times on the keys, when agriculture was about the only thing to be found east of Sarasota. As the secret got out, we’ve seen an influx of business, industry, and year-round residents. During recent peak development years, Siesta Key, Lido Key, and Longboat Key have seen a literal rise in condominiums, hotels, and restaurants. Things have slowed since the recent recession, but buildings are here to stay.

Sure, Casey Key has changed, too. There was a time when young people could light a bonfire on the beach and no one would care. But Casey Key has withstood many of the changes faced by our island neighbors. Drive down our eight miles of peaceful neighborhood streets and you won’t find the crowded hotels, busy restaurants, and sunburned tourists that love our mild Florida winters and pristine beaches. Our small piece of paradise is just that—small. And unspoiled. Numbers tell a story, so here’s a look at Casey Key by the numbers:*

8. Casey Key is just eight miles long. That will never change, give or take a few sand bars.

300. Casey Key is just 300 yards wide. We’re one of the rarest places on earth where your home property can stretch from bay to beach.

563. There are 563 registered voters on our island. We mix celebrity homeowners like Stephen King and Martina Navratilova with old-fashioned, regular folks who’ve achieved their dreams.

411. We have 411 single-family homes here. Breathtaking, most of them. Waterfront designer beauties. And outstanding golf courses are just minutes away.

1. One phone call is all it takes to find your new home on or near Casey Key. Call 800-789-6580 or email Nick Herron with The Herron Group, RE/MAX Alliance Group for more information on Casey Key real estate, waterfront homes, and golf course living.

Just Sold By The Herron Group Bay Front Nokomis Across From Casey Key

This had been a short sale (the owner owed the bank more than the sale price a lot more). I had put an offer in on the property for my client as a back –up to the lower first offer the seller had gotten. After four months of hearing nothing from the Bank. The Bank takes the first offer with out countering it or even notifying us. The first buyer contracts with another buyer who calls us. We were able to assume this second contract and close in a week at not much more than my client’s original offer to the Bank.

I am seeing more and more short sales and foreclosures in the higher end Water Front Properties and Golf Course & Country Club communities. In my eighteen years of selling luxury real estate on Florida’s West Coast I have never experience so many distressed property sales.
This property had 250 feet of sea wall, sailboat water, and two boat docks. The windows had all been replaced with hurricane impact glass, stuccoed, and a new metal roof. It was in very good condition for a short sale property.

A lot of the Short Sale properties have really been damaged by their owners. They have taken the appliances, even the built-ins. Some have taken the sinks and the toilets. Several that I have shown have holes in drywall and doors. Swimming pools are black from being turned off for long period of time. All of these Short Sale and Foreclosure properties are being sold in AS/IS condition. So if you do decide to buy one of these properties. Make sure you get home inspections done immediately and your contract is contingent on the inspections. When buying these Short Sales it is going back to Buyer Be Ware, nothing is warranted.

You can e-mail Nick Herron if you would like more information on Short Sales and Foreclosures.
