Not a day goes by without discovering new reasons to absolutely adore Casey Key, Florida. The Blackburn Point swing bridge is undergoing repair for the month of June, but I took a visitor on a Casey Key joyride from the tip to the top of all eight-miles of luxuriant island the other day. As we prepared to turn the convertible around near the bridge, we impulsively pulled into the parking lot of the Casey Key Library. Located at 800 Blackburn Point Road just across from the Casey Key Fish House, this community-inspired gem of a library would have charmed our socks off, had we been wearing any. But we’d been enjoying the beach just moments before so…no socks.

We were greeted by volunteer librarian and Casey Key resident Connie Davis, whose warm smile and generous welcome made us feel like old friends. We learned that the Casey Key Library is an independent not-for-profit corporation, founded in 1984 by resident Marion Shaw in her spacious garage. This is a computer-free, low-tech, gracious operation complete with a card catalog and self check-out. The library is stocked with hardcover bestsellers and treasures, most of which are less than two years old, and its community room hosts meetings and neighbors. The library is open to residents of Casey Key who are members of the Casey Key Association, and has become quite the neighborhood gathering place.

The Casey Key Library not only provides an impressive collection of spellbinding reads, it also serves the greater good. Two or three neighbor-friendly fundraisers per year generate monies that support literacy programs and local schools. The day we stopped in, a book by a local resident lay open on the desk and I checked it out immediately. It was the stunning “Island Prayers” by author and photographer Jack Perkins, former NBC news correspondent and host of A&E’s “Biography.” Such a fitting book to read later at day’s end as I enjoyed another sunset on Casey Key, Florida.

Let the Sun Shine In!

Florida sunshine…now that’s something we’d like to wrap up in a box and send to our northern, wintry friends. There’s no hint of “seasonal affect disorder” around here…even on a cold day you can usually work on a tan, and we don’t have that many cold days. It’s no wonder Florida is known as the Sunshine State! Wouldn’t you like to bottle up those rays?

Wait a second…that’s what solar energy is all about—harnessing the power of the sun, that fierce ball of flame perched at just the right distance from our small planet to keep us in a delicate balance of life. And right here in our backyard, we’ve just learned of a planned solar energy project that may be the country’s largest. According to a recent Biz941 daily news bulletin:

“The Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice announced yesterday that it is pursuing a partnership with a major power company to create a $350-million solar project on 300 acres that it owns within the city of Venice, east of I-75 off Laurel Road. The facility could produce at least 40 megawatts of clean, renewable electricity, or enough to power 4,800 homes, making it the country's largest solar project. Groundbreaking is expected sometime in 2009.”

By the way, if you aren’t from around here, Venice is a small city just to the south and inland of Casey Key. Known as the “Shark’s Tooth Capital of the World,” it hosts an annual Shark’s Tooth festival to celebrate the abundance of fossilized shark’s teeth that can be found on its beaches. When the grandchildren come to town, take them to the “shark’s tooth beach” to hunt for those tiny, black teeth…when you get there, ask around for tips on how to find them. You’ll see beachcombers with strainers and even spaghetti colanders sifting through the sands. By the way, Venice isn’t the only beach with shark’s teeth…Casey Key’s beaches also are known for excellent shark tooth finds. But don’t worry—we rarely see sharks. These are prehistoric teeth.

Another American tradition popping up all over town are Girl Scout Cookies! Heading onto Lido Key on the way to Longboat Key the other day, we turned right onto N. Adams Drive and there was a mom and daughter with a Girl Scout Cookie stand set up, selling to passers-by. We had to get several boxes of Thin Mints, partly because they taste so good and partly to promote old-fashioned hard work on the part of the Girl Scout selling her cookies.

Nothing says “American tradition” quite like baseball, and Sunday’s Grapefruit League game at Sarasota’s Ed Smith Stadium saw the Reds win over the Yankees 13-11. It was a bit windy for baseball, but a great day to be outside nonetheless. Spring training in Florida attracts all kinds of visitors, and local baseball fans get a chance to see their favorite players in our own backyard.

Beachcombing, looking for shells, spotting dolphins, or just relaxing in the sun and sand is another fine American tradition, at least around Sarasota’ s barrier islands. On the humorous side I thought he was referring to the appearance of the wood which is holey and grooved as to why it helped the house breath. It probably didn’t hurt.

Looking for a Cottage on Casey Key

In the summer, Nick and Kathleen stayed at 2821 Casey Key room with their dog Kisses. The Herron Group celebrated the 4th of July here and all summer had such a great time, Nick and Kathleen extended their stay an extra month. Kisses was welcome on the beach and romped up and down the sand. She dug for crabs and rolled in the sand. Kisses became a real summer beach bum!
